FLU VACCINES 2018/19
Please note that this flu season 2018/19 we have the following vaccines for different age cohorts:
Adjuvanted trivalent flu vaccine (aTIV) for people aged 65 years and over.
The deliveries of aTIV to practices and pharmacies will be staged between September and early November as the country has only one single supplier of this vaccine. Waterfield House is having delivery of these vaccines on week ending 28/09, 26/10 and 16/11. It may be in your interest that you try to vaccinate at the surgery soon after these dates. We will be sending invites to patients before each of these dates.
Quadrivalent vaccine (QIV) for eligible adult patients aged 18-64 years
This is recommended for adults less than 65 years of age who are at increased risk from flu because of a long term health condition. The flu jabs are available at the surgery from October 2018.
Live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) for children
This is a nasal spray and is licensed for children and young people from 2 years old to nine on 31st August 2018 (but not ten years or older). The age groups targeted in England for this vaccine in 2018/19 are two and three year olds (through their GP surgery) and school aged children in reception class through to Year 5 (through schools). We will send invites to only two and three years old who needs to be vaccinated at the surgery once the vaccine is available to us.
In line with recommendations patients registered with Waterfield House Practice who are healthcare workers, social care workers and hospice staff are also eligible for flu vaccines.
To accommodate the staggered delivery of aTIV, we won’t be running Saturday flu clinic but instead will have mini flu clinics spread through the first week of October/November and late November at staggered times. Please make your appointment with the reception. May we ask the patients who will be attending these clinics to be mindful that appointment is for flu jab alone - clinicians won’t have time to discuss any other needs during the flu clinic?
